Many of the women in the SHGs have earmarked lack of clean water in the surrounding areas as a problem. Long and arduous journeys are frequently made, and even then wells and pools are often contaminated. In response to this a British High Commision financed project commenced in mid-2007, aiming to create easily accessible bucket-and-rope wells for each of our SHGs. Not only are the wells accesible, but due to their bucket-and-rope nature they can be easily maintained by the villagers. This is in contrast to pump wells, which often break and cannot be repaired easily. |

Whilst we locate the position of the water and provide all of the necessary equipment, the labour to dig the wells is provided by the villages themselves. By not donating a complete well, but by giving groups something to work for, we believe that a greater sense of community pride and ownership is instilled, which reflects our motto of ‘helping others to help themselves’. An added bonus of this system is that by having worked for the wells, the villages often appreciate them more and do not let them fall into disrepair. We envisage this project as a continuous one that will run until all of our SHGs are provided with water. |
